SWAG Cancer Alliance partners with Bristol Rovers and Bristol NHS Group to launch Prostate Cancer Awareness Campaign

SWAG Cancer Alliance is proud to join Bristol Rovers Football Club, Bristol Rovers Community Trust and Bristol NHS Group in launching ‘The John Green Campaign’ – a new community initiative designed to increase awareness of prostate cancer and support earlier diagnosis.

John’s Story

Named in honour of lifelong Bristol Rovers supporter John Green, who was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer in early 2024, the campaign aims to raise understanding of prostate cancer risk and the signs and symptoms among male supporters and their families, as well as encourage early help-seeking and open conversations.

Since his diagnosis, John has worked with football clubs across the country to promote honest dialogue about men’s health. His determination and openness have inspired the development of this new campaign, which will run throughout March in partnership with Bristol Rovers across three men’s home fixtures at The Memorial Stadium:

  • Crewe Alexandra – Saturday 7 March
  • Shrewsbury Town – Tuesday 17 March
  • Accrington Stanley – Saturday 28 March

Supporters will see educational content, campaign messaging and activity delivered in collaboration with the SWAG Cancer Alliance and Bristol NHS Group. An additional awareness event will take place at The Memorial Stadium on Wednesday 25 March 2026, featuring a panel of clinical experts and opportunities for fans to learn more about prostate cancer risks and symptoms. Each person who attends will get a free ticket to the final game of the campaign on Saturday 28th March.

The campaign builds on the ongoing partnership between Bristol Rovers Community Trust and North Bristol NHS Trust (part of the Bristol NHS Group), who have already collaborated on health checks, winter flu awareness and CPR training for young people across Bristol.

Adam Tutton, CEO of Bristol Rovers Community Trust, said: “We’re honoured to back John and the campaign to raise awareness of prostate cancer risks and prevention pathways. Our aim is always to use the power of football to support and uplift our community.”

Maria Kane, Chief Executive of Bristol NHS Group, said: “This collaboration with SWAG Cancer Alliance, which we host, and Bristol Rovers enables us to reach a wider audience with important health information and guidance.”

Dr Helen Winter, Clinical Director of SWAG Cancer Alliance, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Bristol Rovers on a campaign that shines a light on prostate cancer. It’s an issue that affects so many men, yet too often remains difficult to talk about openly. By using their strong platform and loyal supporter base, Bristol Rovers are helping to start vital conversations. Early diagnosis is vital, and this campaign has real potential to make a meaningful difference.”
